🧬 How to Collect a Blood Sample for DNA Testing

What You'll Need

  • ☕ Coffee filter (cut into one small triangle per sample)
  • ✂️ Toenail clippers/scissors/Pet Nail Clippers
  • 🧴 Alcohol wipes or rubbing alcohol
  • 🩹 Gauze or paper towel
  • 🖊 Permanent marker
  • 📦 Small zip-top bag or paper envelope

Step 1 – Prepare Your Samples

  • Label each sample before collecting.
  • Write the sample number that matches your submission form.
  • Wash your hands before handling birds.

Step 2 – Collect the Blood Sample

  • Clean the toenail and nail clippers with rubbing alcohol.
  • Trim only the very tip of the toenail until a small drop of blood appears.
  • Gently massage the toe if needed.
  • Place 1–2 drops of blood onto the coffee filter.

Step 3 – Stop the Bleeding

  • Apply gentle pressure with gauze or paper towel for 30–60 seconds.
  • Return your bird once the bleeding has stopped.

Step 4 – Allow Samples to Dry

  • Air dry completely before packaging.
  • Do not stack or seal wet samples.
  • Keep samples clean and dry.

Step 5 – Package & Mail

  • Place each fully dried coffee filter into its own labeled paper envelope or zip bag.
  • Complete your online Sample Submission Form after placing your order.
  • Once your submission form has been completed, you will immediately receive your mailing instructions and shipping address.
  • Mail your samples following those instructions.

  • Clean your clippers with alcohol between every bird.
  • Label samples before collecting blood.
  • Allow samples to dry completely.
  • Avoid touching the blood spot.
  • Prevent blood from different birds from touching.
  • One dried blood spot about the size of a pencil eraser is plenty.
