Frequently asked questions
What sample types do you collect?
We recommend properly collected blood samples on a clean coffee filter for the most accurate results. Feather samples are also accepted for larger birds like emus. Please follow our sample collection instructions carefully (Can be found on Submit DNA Samples page) to help ensure accurate results.
How do I submit samples?
First, place your order and complete the online sample submission form. After submitting the form, you will receive mailing instructions for sending your samples to the lab.
What is your mailing address?
Our mailing address will be provided after you complete the Submit DNA Sample Form. Visit the Submit DNA Sample page and enter your order information along with each bird’s identifying information. Once the form is submitted, the mailing address will appear.
How long does testing take?
Most results are completed within 12-24 hours of your samples arriving at the lab. Turnaround times may vary during busy periods.
How will I receive my results?
Your results will be sent electronically using the email address provided with your order. Please double-check that your contact information is correct.
What happens if my sample is inconclusive?
An inconclusive result may occur when there is not enough usable blood, the sample is contaminated, or it was collected on an unsuitable material. We will contact you if a new sample is needed.
Can I use printer paper for blood samples?
No. Please use a clean coffee filter. Printer paper can swell inside the testing tube and absorb the liquids needed during the testing process, which may cause an inconclusive result.
Do you offer refunds?
Because DNA testing services and laboratory supplies are prepared specifically for each order, completed testing services are nonrefundable. Please review our refund policy for full details.
How should I label multiple bird samples?
Clearly label every sample with a unique bird name or identification number. The information on each sample must match the information entered on your submission form.
Can samples from different birds touch each other?
No. Keep each bird’s sample separate to prevent cross-contamination. Wash your hands or change gloves between birds and use clean collection materials for every sample.
